YMCA of San Benito County

After School

The After-School Program at the Y is unique in many ways.

  • We stress youth development. From learning to tie their shoes, reading, homework help, to shooting a basketball, we actually teach children life and social skills at the Y
  • We implement service learning. At the Y, we think it's important for kids to give back and be connected to their local communities. Our service learning activities for the year are below
    • January: Pet donations- food, toys, blankets, litter, etc (Pet Friends)
    • February: Youth empowering Youth (youth as resources- helping others, posters)
    • March: Y Campaign: My Y Week- basket raffles, Relays and Runs(Strong Communities Campaign)
    • April: Shoe box surprise (Jacob’s Heart)
    • May: Bouquet of kindness (Cards/paper made flowers to school personnel, garden)
    • August: Campus Clean up (School campus)
    • September: Pennies in Piggies (United Way)
    • October: Trick or Treat for Toiletries (Homeless Shelter)
    • November: Decorate a Tree (Downtown association- donate to local family), Collect food (Local Food Bank)
    • December: Holiday Placemats (Nursing center or Meals on Wheels)
  • We track developmental assets. At the Y, we believe there are activities that contribute to a healthy, whole child.

  • Physical activity is important. Our child care directors have also been involved in sports and so volunteer to run free clinics (such as soccer or basketball) during our After-School programs.'

  • We believe nutrition is key to a healthy child. We provide a well balanced nutritional snack every day to our children.
