Season of Giving is in Full Swing at the Central Coast YMCA!

November 28, 2017

Today is #GivingTuesday, so we figured the best way to celebrate this holiday (which was founded at the legendary 92nd Street YMCA in New York City, did you know?) is to share stories of the way our Y members, donors, volunteers, staff and community partners transform themselves and our communities — all to build a better US.

We will highlight a new story each week of the holiday season — what better way to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year?

Our first story features the incredible staff members of the YMCA of San Benito County, who every year on the first Saturday of the month, donate their time to Small Steps of San Benito County.

According to the Small Steps website, “Small Steps was founded in 1997 by members of a local accounting firm.  Our mission is to provide warm winter coats and shoes for children of San Benito County that may not otherwise receive these needed items.”

Mayra Zendejas, Center Director for the YMCA of San Benito County, described the event.

“We put a staff team together and get up early (6 a.m.!) and help take children shopping for winter clothes and necessities at Target.  Some of these kids are from some of our Y programs!   We started with just 4 staff participating about 6 years ago to 25 this year.  Just another way our amazing YMCA of San Benito County Staff is making a difference in our community. We are beyond honored to be part of this selfless group!”

Special thanks to:

  • Small Steps for organizing this event and including us for the last several years
  • All of our staff members who gave their time and enthusiasm to this cause
  • Andy Briant from Fashion Streaks in Seaside for donating our staff team shirts for this event, two years in a row!
